Background of the Study
In academic environments, the secure exchange of files between students, faculty, and staff is essential to safeguard sensitive information. Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State, relies on digital platforms for sharing academic materials, research data, and administrative documents. However, the current methods for transferring files may not provide adequate security measures, leading to potential data breaches or unauthorized access.
File Transfer Protocols (FTP) are widely used to facilitate the exchange of files over networks, but traditional FTP lacks robust security features, such as encryption. This study aims to implement a secure file transfer protocol (SFTP) at Federal University, Kashere, that will offer strong encryption and authentication mechanisms to ensure the secure transfer of files within the university’s network.
Statement of the Problem
The university's current file transfer methods may expose sensitive academic and administrative data to unauthorized access or tampering. There is a need for a secure and reliable method to exchange files within the university's network. This study will address this gap by implementing a secure file transfer protocol that ensures data integrity and confidentiality.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the current file transfer methods used at Federal University, Kashere.
To design and implement a secure file transfer protocol that ensures the confidentiality and integrity of files.
To assess the effectiveness of the secure file transfer protocol in improving data security and file sharing.
Research Questions
What are the limitations of the current file transfer methods at Federal University, Kashere?
How can a secure file transfer protocol enhance the security of file exchanges at the university?
What impact will the implementation of a secure file transfer protocol have on data confidentiality and integrity?
Significance of the Study
The study will help Federal University, Kashere, to secure its file-sharing practices by implementing a protocol that ensures sensitive data remains protected during transfer. This will enhance the university’s overall cybersecurity posture and reduce the risk of unauthorized data access or leakage.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on implementing a secure file transfer protocol at Federal University, Kashere. It will not include other aspects of cybersecurity or file storage outside of file transfer protocols.
Definitions of Terms
Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP): A protocol used for secure file transfer that encrypts data during transmission to protect it from unauthorized access.
Data Integrity: The assurance that data remains accurate and unaltered during transfer or storage.
Encryption: The process of converting data into a format that cannot be read without a decryption key, ensuring confidentiality.
